We are used to giving our clients better CVs than they’ll get anywhere else in the world. But is there such a thing as “the best CV in the world?”
The truth is that there is no such thing as “the best CV in the world.”
Well, to give you an example…
If you went to every CV firm on the planet to write you a CFO CV, then sent us the ‘best of the bunch’, then we’d improve it – usually dramatically and on pretty much every front.
Naturally, you might think you had the best CV in the world.
Well, not necessarily. Consider this scenario…
After a couple of years as CFO, you decide you want to step up to CEO, and apply for top global CEO jobs. Unlike before when your CV helped you land a great job quickly, for some reason you aren’t getting results this time. You have a friend who is a decision-maker at the one of the firms you applied to. She confirms that your CV stands out head and shoulders above all the other CVs in terms of how it looks and reads. But…
But… they were looking for a CEO, and you applied with a CFO CV.
While your great CFO CV unlocked doors to top CFO jobs, just like any key, it only works for the things it was designed to fit.
This doesn’t mean to say you can’t land other jobs. However, you need the right key.
Sometimes this means altering your existing key. Sometimes it means a brand-new key. For example, in this scenario, you’d need a separate key for CEO jobs. However, you might still get away with some adjustments to your CFO key if you were going from e.g. a start-up CFO role to CFO at a global company.
It’s a matter of horses for courses.
